Karen Sparks is popularly known as Ted Bundy’s first known survivor. Karen who was an 18-year-old student, and dancer at the University of Washington almost had her life terminated by Ted – an Infamous serial killer who was known to have murdered at least 30 young women across 7 different states in the United States from 1974-1978.
Over 3 decades after his execution, Theodore Robert Bundy better known as Ted Bundy is still remembered for committing crimes like kidnapping, raping, and gruesome murder of a lot of young women.
Sparks who had a near-death experience with Ted initially refused to talk about the incident for a long time despite how curious the media became about her story. She however decided to open up in the amazon prime docu-series Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer (2020) as directed by Trish Wood.

1. Karen Sparks was a Student of Political Science at the University of Washington
Sparks has said before the ugly incident she had with Ted, she used to be a young student and dancer at the University of Washington studying political science. She was also living in the University District neighborhood of Seattle and this happened to be the location Ted followed her to.
2. She was Attacked by Ted Bundy on the 4th of January 1974
Karen’s attack occurred on January 4, 1974. According to her, she was sleeping in her room when Bundy entered and attacked her. Prior to the attack, Karen said she remember seeing an older man staring at her at a nearby laundromat and he will look away anytime she looked at him. She however thought it was just one of those things young ladies always experience.
The police however said Bundy had likely been stalking Sparks before he decided to strike. According to the authorities, he chose his victims carefully and was not just on a mission of carrying out random attacks.
3. Her Skull was Smashed with a Bed Frame
While narrating her story, Sparks said Bundy used her bedframe to smash her skull. As if that was not enough, he still beat her up and used another item believed to be the same bedframe to smash her v*gina deep into her bladder, causing it to split. The penetration caused her causing severe internal injuries.
4. She Believes a Random Coincidence Saved Her Life
Things may have gotten worse if something did not interrupt the heinous act Bundy was carrying out against Sparks on the day of her attack. According to her, Bundy probably eloped because her roommate was talking in his sleep next door. She said Chuck was in the habit of talking in his sleep and this probably prompted the serial killer to run away.
5. Karen Sparks was Helped by her Roommate
It took almost 18-20 hours before her roommate, Bob found her. Bob who was in another room at the time of her attack thought she was still sleeping. He however decided to check on her only to discover that she was lying in her own pool of blood. Bob immediately called 911 and also informed her mother about her situation.

Following the severe injuries, Sparks sustained she went into a coma for close to 10 days, and by the time she woke up, she could not remember what had happened to her.
Her injuries resulted in permanent brain damage with a loss of 50% of her hearing and 40% of her vision. She also claimed she had horrible ringing and roaring in her ears after the unspeakable incident. After the attack, Sparks said she suffered epileptic fits but thank goodness she eventually overcame it.
7. Her Father was Very Committed and Instrumental in Her Recovery Process
Spark spoke of her family’s love and support to ensure she gets better. She was particular about her father who was said to have been very committed to ensuring that his daughter is able to walk again. She also said doctors had initially suggested that her family should send her to a nursing home but her dad insisted that she be nursed at home.
8. Many Publications Were Made about Karen Sparks and Her Near-Death Experience
Karen’s story has continued to attract the attention of the public especially because she is one of the few survivors of Ted’s ‘shadow of death’. She was notably referred to as Joni Lenz in Ann Rule’s book. Apart from Tisha’s documentary, other short stories and movies were also produced with respect to her experience with Ted.

9. What Exactly were Bundy’s Motives?
According to reports, all of Bundy’s victims appear quiet and unharmful. The question of why he chose to inflict harm on innocent unsuspecting women may be a very hard puzzle to solve.
In any case, some sources have alleged that Bundy was simply out for revenge against an ex named Diane Edwards. Sources say Diane’s father did not approve of his relationship with his daughter and that experience left a lasting impact on him. This may or may not have been the reason for his actions.

Many years after her attack, Karen is an accountant. She made a decision not to let an unfortunate brutal experience define her life for any reason at all. She now further has a happy and successful life with a beautiful family of her own. In as much as she finally opened up, she said she cannot bring herself to share her story with her kids directly.
Furthermore, Karen once mentioned she doesn’t want to be marked as a victim at any point. According to her, she has fought so hard to overcome her fears and dark moments.
