Jennifer Alfonso was a 26-year-old American woman slain by her husband Derek Medina in their home. The horrific event took place at their Miami apartment on the 8th of August 2013. The man reportedly shot her a consecutive 8 times, with bullet wounds to her head, neck, and chest. While the altercation was going on, the couple’s 10 years old daughter was up in her room, but she was not harmed.
After murdering his wife, Medina then uploaded the picture of her dead body on Facebook. He later reported the incident and handed himself over to the Miami police. He was arrested and charged to court.
What Allegedly Led To The Altercation
According to trial testimony, everything started in the couple’s bedroom upstairs. It revealed that the hostility began following Medina’s failure to fulfill his promise of waking Jennifer Alfonso in the early hours of the morning to see a movie.
Those in charge of the crime’s investigations gave testimonies that the slain woman flung mascara containers and towels at her husband for pointing a gun at her. However, he didn’t fire a shot at that time.
It didn’t stop at the bedroom, it later resumed in the kitchen downstairs. One of the interior surveillance cameras caught some part of it in their home.
How Jennifer Alfonso Was Murdered In Cold Blood
After the altercation in the bedroom and subsequent continuation at the kitchen downstairs, Medina revealed to the police that his wife hauled out a big kitchen knife on him. He also said he overpowers and neutralizes her. He then exited upstairs again and reappeared with a gun.
He shot her several times while she continued to fight with her fists. A medical examination carried out reveals she was shot 8 times. And that all the shots came from a vertical angle towards her position in the kitchen. It further shows that she was trembling on her knees when slain.

His Surrender And Arrest
After murdering her in cold blood, he did the unthinkable by taking a picture of her dead body. That wasn’t all; he uploaded it on Facebook with a caption. But before uploading the picture, he earlier sent a message showing that he had killed his wife and is going to die or go to jail.
He also explained that he suffered abuse and couldn’t take it anymore; so he did what he had to do. That same Thursday morning, he left the house and approached the officers of the law.
It was just a few hours after the shooting and killing of his wife Jennifer Alfonso that he turned himself over to the police. The officers went to the house and found her dead body covered in blood.
They also discovered his 10 years old daughter in the house with no bruise or injury.
Derek Medina Was Given A Life Sentence For Killing Jennifer Alfonso
The shreds of evidence presented by the prosecution and examiners against him were so enormous in they showed how he killed his wife with a gun. But on the counter, his defense lawyers claimed it was Jennifer Alfonso that first attacked him with a knife. To defend himself, he went upstairs and brought a gun which he used in killing her.
They also make claims that the wife was the one abusing him. And that it has been happening for years. However, it was proven beyond reasonable doubt that he indeed murdered his wife on that faithful Thursday morning of August 8th, 2013 in their home.
And while at it there was a 10-year-old girl, their daughter in the house. The odds are against him. He must have been a prophet for prophesying that he would go to prison for killing his wife and that was what he was given.
On Friday, 5th February 2016, Judge Yvonne Colodny of the Miami-Dede Circuit issued a maximum sentence with no parole on Derek Medina 33. He got a life sentence for gravely shooting his wife Jennifer Alfonso 8 times during a furious argument.
He also got a 15 years sentence for the illegal firing of a weapon inside an abode. He got another 5 years for child neglect. This is because, during the time of the shooting, the couple’s 10 years old daughter was in the building. She didn’t know of the killing, however; he left her alone in the apartment for many hours while he went to report himself to the police.
