- He was arrested by the police when the matter was reported to the police
From somewhere in India, the news has broken that a man has indeed stolen his wife’s kidney as unpaid dowry after her family has been unable to pay for her bride price. While in many parts of the world, it is the man’s family that pays the dowry or bride price when a man and a woman want to marry, it is the other way round. As a result of this, there have always been bitter confrontations most especially when the woman’s family is too poor to pay such dowry.
Here are 5 quick facts you need to know about the Indian man that has stolen his wife’s kidney as unpaid dowry:
1. The man and woman have been together for many years
It will interest you to know that the man and the woman whose kidney he stole have been married since 2005. This means that the two have been together for close to 13 years, even though it is not long time enough for the man to let go of the dowry.
The man whose name is given as Biswajit Sarkar got married to the victim, Rita Sarkar. Because of this, her family was supposed to pay the man 180,000 Indian rupees ($2,800), but since then, it has failed to. As reported, however, the family already had the money and the needed silver and gold, but her husband wanted more.
“He used to say ‘your father has so many cars, he’s sitting there with so much wealth, look at us, we have nothing,’” the woman’s father stated.
In their years of being together, the couple has an 11-year-old son.
2. How he stole the kidney as an unpaid dowry
According to Rita Sarkar, her husband has been domestically abusing her because her family has been unable to pay for her dowry. However, in 2017, she got ill and was taken to a private nursing home in Kolkata where it was claimed that she would have an appendix which had a problem removed.
Weeks after the operation was concluded and her husband warned her not to tell anyone of the procedure, the woman began experiencing back problems but her husband didn’t allow her to alert her people just as he didn’t take her to the hospital until she got a little better to hint her family which came and took her to the hospital only to be revealed through an ultra-scan and be confirmed again in another that her right kidney has been removed.
“Now, I understand why he forbade me to reveal anything,” Rita Sarkar said while speaking to the New Indian Express.
Obviously, the man and his alleged accomplices have taken out the vital organ to sell it as there is a very large illegal human organ market in the country. Humans are sometimes kidnapped and their organs are harvested and sold.

3. Accusations and Counter-accusations
After reporting the matter to the police, Biswajit Sarkar and his brother were arrested and the husband didn’t waste time before confessing to the crime. But in his defense, he said he took the kidney out so as to buy another estate and his wife consented to the deal and she went on to even sign it.
On the contrary, Rita Sarkar said that was not true, and even if there was any evidence of her signing it, it was under an influence. The woman revealed that before the operation, her husband took her to a relative’s place where she was given a soda drink. She stated that she didn’t know what happened next as she became sedated.
At the moment, the woman is very sick because after the right kidney was taken, the left got infected and she is now struggling so that it doesn’t fail.
4. There is a history of abuse as a result of dowry in India
Even though the case of Rita has caught global attention, men in India are very notorious for abusing their wives because their families have failed or been unable to pay the dowry.
In one such brutal and inhumane case, a man in the country was said to have bathed his wife with acid because her family has been unable to pay her dowry. The case which was reported in the Alappuzha district in Kerala noted that the 31-years-old woman’s husband first attacked her with a plank of wood before pouring the acid on her.
There are also many similar cases with some ending in the woman losing her life. Below is a clip of an Indian man allegedly beating his mother-in-law for bride price.
5. Payment of dowry in India has been stopped
Interestingly enough, even as the man took himself low enough to steal his wife’s kidney as payment for the bride price, the practice has been stopped in the country since 1961. Still, the practice has remained even as the government went on in the 1980s to put a stronger law that would stop the practice for good. Still, it has persisted to date.
